Genetic Conservation and Restoration of Endangered Forest Tree Species in Asia-Pacific

International symposium

16-19 March 2020, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Countries of the world are currently developing the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, to halt biodiversity loss, assist the recovery of degraded ecosystems and enable sustainable use of species and their genetic resources for human well-being. With the growing interest for forest and landscape restoration and nature-based solutions to climate change, forests and trees are central part of this developing agenda. However, to realise the role that forests and trees can play in addressing global challenges, more efforts are needed to conserve and restore thousands of species and their genetic resources that are currently threatened. In Asia alone, threatened tree species number at least 1,800, according to country reports submitted to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Asia-Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Programme (APFORGEN) and partners are organising an international symposium to share and synthesise latest knowledge on the region’s endangered tree species, their genetic diversity, and good practices in their conservation, management, restoration and sustainable use. In particular, the symposium sessions are expected to contribute to the following Strategic Priorities of the Global Plan of Action on Forest Genetic Resources:

Promote the establishment and the reinforcement of FGR information systems (databases) to cover available scientific and

traditional knowledge on uses, distribution, habitats, biology and genetic variation of species and species populations

Develop and implement regional in situ conservation strategies and promote ecoregional networking and collaboration

Promote restoration and rehabilitation of ecosystems using genetically appropriate material

Update FGR conservation and management needs and integrate them into wider policies, programmes and frameworks

of action at national, regional and global levels

Results of the symposium will be used to inform the implementation of APFORGEN’s regional strategy and the Global Plan of Action in the Asia-Pacific region; the development of the Second State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources report by FAO; and future national and regional implementation of the post-2020 biodiversity framework in Asian countries.

We would be honoured to have your participation at this symposium. Your travel costs (using the most economic route), visa fees, accommodation and meals will be covered by the workshop organisers. To register to the symposium, kindly complete and return to us the attached registration form no later than 17 February 2020.

The symposium is jointly organized by APFORGEN, the Forest Research and Development Agency of Indonesia (FORDA), the Chinese Academy of Forestry, the Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI) and Bioversity International. The workshop is funded by the Republic of Korea through the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFOS).
